Early Tuesday morning, Granville drove Emily to the ferry terminal for her return to Victoria. She almost wished she didn’t have to leave again—her life was here. But she couldn’t leave poor Betsy’s case unsolved, and her killer free. She just couldn’t.

“I could still come with you, you know,” Granville said as they neared the ferry docks.

He’d offered before, and once again Emily was tempted. It would be easier with two of them. And she missed him when she was away.

But this was her case. Hers. And she was close to finding Betsy’s killer, she could feel it.

How could she tell Granville that she didn’t want his involvement?

“I know, and I wish you could,” she said, smiling at him. And that was true, too. “But you have your own case here. And until you solve it, Mr. Randall is still in danger, isn’t he?”

“With the two of us, we could solve your case faster, then come home and solve mine,” he said persuasively, and dropped a kiss in her palm. “It’s likely to be more efficient in any case. We work well together.”

Emily tightened her hand on his. He turned his hand over, holding it in his warm grip.

“We do,” she said. “But I just can’t.”

He gave her a searching look. “Betsy matters to you,” he said.

“Yes. She does.”

“And this is your first case.”

She swallowed hard. Nodded.

He smiled at her, and began to talk about the people they’d met after church yesterday.

He understood. Emily’s heart swelled and she held his hand tight, loving him more than ever.

Then with an effort she concentrated on what he was saying.
